The Dignity of Difference: A look at US and European approaches to multiculturalism and national identity
Speakers: David Garrow, Senior Research Fellow in Homerton College, University of Cambridge
Tariq Ramadan, Visiting Fellow at St. Antony’s College, University of Oxford
An engaged debate exploring the transatlantic approaches to diversity and living together. At a time when the issue of multiculturalism and identity in the UK is being hotly contested across the political spectrum, a discourse has emerged that revolves around a notion of integration. Some point to the ‘hyphenated’ US model as one that we should emulate, with others looking at European templates.
However, the spotlight on race and poverty in the US, as a result of Katrina, has led to a number of US commentators , particularly from the 'left', echoing Stan Greenburg’s 'The Two Americas’ mantra. It has brought back to the surface the critique that a hyphenated American identity continues to ill-serve minorities. In Europe governments and politicians alike, continue to grapple with the notion of faith identity, particularly in the context of a growing Muslim population. Can they learn lessons from the US political right who have readily taken this on, regardless of its varied ramifications? And what of the political left? Its historical reluctance to seriously consider faith identity suggests that it needs to take an intellectual leap forward.

Imperial Friday Prayer Crisis
|
|
These photos were taken, when we for the first time in 20 years; performing friday prayer on Queens Lawn. The college has refused to supply us with a proper comfortable place for us to perform our weekly obligatory prayer since the demolition of Southside Hall where we used to perform our prayer there. Many efforts have been done, but since now, no positive response is received from the college yet many excuses have been made. Well probably these are the challanges and sacrifice we have to make in this holy month of Ramadhan. Now I would like to share our experience/struggle in order to claim our rights to perform our religious practice with you through these photos.

Lightening the darkest moment

This might be the first blackout for almost 4 years. These photos were taken using night mode. I love the effect.

Bukit Tinggi : Last family trip
|
|
These are some photos taken in my last family trip before I'm going back to the UK. Nice and cold weather- I regard this as my training before facing a much colder weather back there in the UK.
